The January Power Loss of Cruise Ships

The MSC Opera isn't the only cruise ship to have experienced a power outage in January. The Carnival Triumph and the Viking Sky also had issues. No one was left behind, however. A statement from Carnival Cruise Lines on January 25 confirmed that the ships were not stranded.

MSC Opera

Saturday saw over 1,700 passengers left without power after MSC Opera's cruise ship, MSC Opera, lost power off the coast, Baltic Sea. The ship was without power, lighting or water due to an electrical problem. The ship also lost its service at the hotel. The ship drifted around for three days, until tugboats were able intercept it and tow them to a nearby port. The ship was then towed to the Nynamshamn port near Stockholm.

The MSC Opera was not affected by the incident. The ship was just six miles/ten kilometers away from Visby when it experienced a power outage that affected its electrical, running water and toilet systems. The ship had to cancel its 10-day cruise to Southampton because of the power outage. MSC Cruises has offered to rebook the passengers and give them their money back.

Viking Sky

Recent Viking Sky cruise vessel disaster in Hustadvika Norway highlights the high risks involved in Arctic travel. It brought to light the high risk associated with equipment failures at sea and their consequences for passengers and crew. As cruise ships continue to make the journey, this risk is expected to increase.

On Saturday, the cruise ship was hit by rough seas off Norway and suffered an engine failure. Although the ship was just minutes away from hitting the rocks, its engines failed. However, the crew restarted three engines to move it towards shore. It is believed that around half of the 1,373 passengers were airlifted to safety. Most of them were American citizens or British.

Carnival Triumph

After a fire in the engine room, the Carnival Triumph lost power. Four days of drifting in the Gulf of Mexico was what the ship did. It was eventually towable to Mobile in Alabama. The passengers onboard filed a lawsuit against Carnival alleging negligence and breach of contract. The passengers complained about the problems they experienced and sought answers.

The captain of the ship managed to turn on the ship's generator. However, it was not until the cruise vessel lost power for around eight more minutes. The power cut affected three decks, including the incinerator, and caused a smoke problem.

How To

How to be safe on a cruise ship

On a cruise ship, there are many things you should know before embarking on your journey. You must understand how to behave when onboard so you don't get into trouble. These safety tips will make your trip more enjoyable.

  1. Pay attention to your surroundings at all costs. People often gather onboard cruise ships to share meals. It's easy to become distracted from your duties because you're surrounded by people who want to chat and eat. Do not let people distract you from your task. If you notice someone engaging in dangerous behavior, such as smoking, or drinking alcohol, politely tell them to stop.
  2. Your room key should always be with you on board the ship. If you get lost or need to be found, this will help you to locate your shipmates. Make sure you have your passport handy too.
  3. Keep valuables away from prying eyes. Most cabins have drawers under their beds. That's a great place to store valuables such as passports, credit cards, and money. You should also make sure that nothing of value is visible. Place your bags in the closet.
  4. Keep hydrated. While cruise ships have plenty of water, sometimes it can be difficult for passengers to remember to drink enough. Use the free bottled water that is available onboard. Do not become dehydrated. Dehydration makes you tired and cranky, leading to fights or accidents.
  5. Always pay attention to announcements. Announcements are displayed everywhere, including on TV screens. These announcements include safety procedures, emergency exits and weather reports. These announcements need to be taken seriously. They could save your life.
  6. Lock your cabin door before you leave it. No matter how kind a crew member might seem, your cabin should be locked. Thieves are known to break in through doors that are not locked. You should ask the crew for permission before you use the restroom.
  7. Avoid falling overboard alone. The crew will need to wait for you to be rescued if you do fall overboard. Your body could be attracted by sharks or other sea animals. It's best to wait until help arrives.
  8. Never smoke inside the elevator. These elevators have high pressure, so smoke can build-up quickly. You should immediately get off if you feel dizzy, lightheaded or confused. Although the air outside may be fresh, that doesn't mean your breathing is safe.
  9. Know how to evacuate. Every year, many people die in elevators. Follow the instructions on screen if you are in an emergency.
  10. Make sure you are familiar with the fire drill. Fire drills take place regularly, almost every day. Everyone on deck must evacuate when there is a drill. Follow the instructions of the crew members. Once the drill has been completed, return back to your cabin.
  11. Ask questions before you accept food and drinks. Cruisers frequently experience food poisoning. It is common for people to not realize that certain foods can't be eaten onboard ships. On most cruise ships, raw oysters are prohibited. If you're unsure whether or not the food you've been offered is safe, politely refuse and look for another meal instead.
  12. Take care when you use the pool. There have been numerous instances of people accidentally falling into the pools. It is possible to slip and fall into the pool without being noticed. It's also possible to slip and fall on deck at any time. So always wear proper footwear and pay attention to your surroundings.
