Galveston Cruise News: The Port of Galveston continues to expand

cruise line news carnival

Galveston Cruise News: Galveston is a top port for cruises in North America. It's home to a number of popular ships, including Royal Caribbean International's Adventure of the Seas, Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Dream, Carnival Vista and Carnival Breeze, Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Prima, Princess Cruises' Ruby Princess and Disney Cruise Line's Disney Magic.

Port of Galveston has continued to grow as a year-round homeport for cruise ships. It's currently the fourth busiest cruise port in North America and has seen huge growth over the last two decades.

Rodger Rees of Galveston Wharves says that a record number of cruise passengers passed through the Port of Galveston during 2018. This trend looks to be continuing, according to Rees. Total of 1,96,000,000 passengers went through the Port in 2018, which is an all-time highest and new record.

Galveston was able attract more cruise lines and vessels to the Port. This is due to a combination of several factors, says Rodger Rees, the Port's CEO and port director.

He says that some of the newer cruise lines are now seeing pent-up demand after their 1 1/2-year hiatus when the industry was hit hard by the COVID pandemic in 2019. He also points out that people who previously cruised from Houston or Miami find Galveston a more convenient location.

One of the biggest reasons for this increase in passengers is that most ships sailing out of Galveston offer longer itineraries. These itineraries, which can sometimes be up to four or even five days long, will usually focus on destinations within the Western Caribbean.

This increase in itineraries is largely thanks to the addition of three new ships: Allure of the Seas, which sails seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries; Norwegian Cruise Line's newest ship, Norwegian Prima, which visits Galveston twice this year and will start homeporting from there in December 2023; and Carnival Cruise Line's brand-new Miracle, which is scheduled to visit Galveston for its first time in fall 2024.

Galveston, located on the industrial side of the city, has much to offer visitors. It's a city of beautiful beaches and historic hotels, restaurants and shopping, all just a few blocks away from the piers where the cruise ships are docked.

Galveston's cruise port is growing, and by 2022 it will have welcomed its first million passenger cruise ship. The Port of Galveston is the fourth largest cruise port in North America and has grown from no cruise ships based in Galveston 22 years ago to more than eight cruise lines with regular departures now from the port.
